Losing weight can be a difficult, maddening and occasionally lonely affair.
Weighing 100kg (15.7 stones) and a size 18, Courtney Ley was unhappy with her body, and she wasn't the only one. For Matt Wolfs depression was a constant companion while he weighed 180kg (28.3), to make matters worse he was also suffering from Type 2 diabetes.
The Melbourne duo – who met one another at the gym – collectively lost over 100kg (15.7 stones) between them, and have decided to launch a podcast on their personal training business.
Speaking to news.com.au , 39-year-old Wolfs said his weight gain started when he was a teenager, and continued into adulthood. A combination of factors, including lack of physical activity and junk food, contributed to the weight.
My vision was impaired, there was a funny taste in my mouth, I was craving sugar. When I told the doctor I couldn’t see the TV, I was hospitalised as a Type 2 diabetic.
Despite committing to the gym three hours a day, six days a week, the weight wasn’t coming off.
I had a very bad day and thought about killing myself, was very close to doing it before I talked to my mum.
After this point, he began to work with a personal trainer, and two-and-a-half years later, met his wife at the gym, who had also been struggling with her weight.
Ley said:
I didn’t start being really overweight until I was 18 and stopped playing sport. I was about 100kg, now I sit around the 70-75kg mark. I had a fear of the scales.
Having shed over 100kg between them, the duo started a joint personal training business.
Here are Courtney and Matt's tips if you're thinking of embarking on a weight loss plan:
- Don’t follow fads
- Follow a long term plan
- Don’t train by yourself
- Allow for mistakes
- Experience is the best teacher
- Your mental state is important
- Know why you want to lose the weight
- Simple is the best way – healthy diet and a good workout plan.Â
