An 81-year-old woman has become the oldest person to complete a 'beer mile' challenge, but says she probably would have done better drinking scotch.

Elvira Montes from Texas came in at 20 minutes and 24 seconds, beating her 47-year-old daughter's time of 21:15, and putting her son-in-law, who didn't finish the race, to shame.

In case you're not familiar with the concept, in a 'beer mile' runners down a pint before the race starts, and then another beer for each quarter of a mile. If you throw up, you're disqualified.

Speaking to the El Paso Times, Montes said:

I'm not a big beer drinker... I like beer when the weather is real hot and there's nothing else to drink. I'm really a scotch drinker, Chivas if it's available. If it was scotch we were drinking instead of beer, I would have run a lot faster.

The Beer Mile World Championships is an annual event held in Austin every December.

We're looking forward to Montes' race in 2016.
