The first presidential debate between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump took place on Monday at Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York.

Trump made a lot of mistakes and said a lot of things that weren't true.

To round a handful of them up:

1. He denied ever saying that global warming was a concept created by the Chinese to harm US manufacturing.

2. He said that it was "wrong" to say he supported the invasion of Iraq.

In a 2002 interview with Stern, he was asked if he agreed with the Bush administration invading Iraq.

He replied:

Yeah, I guess so.

I wish the first time it was done correctly.

3. He said that not paying federal taxes made him smart, and then denied doing so after the debate.

4. He said he ended the 'birther' question about Obama in 2011.

Trump said:

I was the one who got him to produce the birth certificate. I think I did a good job

It's true he seized on the birtherism fascination in 2011, but even after Obama released his long-form birth certificate in April 2011, Trump continued to demur on the question, even in his own presidential run as late as last year.

5. He said American manufacturing was in decline.

As Vox has proved with this chart, it isn't.

6. He said Clinton has "been fighting ISIS your entire adult life".

Clinton was born in 1947 and took office in 2001.

Isis was established in 2004, when Clinton was 57, as al-Qaeda in Iraq, before officially becoming Isis in 2006.

It's safe to say that he made a lot of mistakes. Anyway.

He also said his greatest strength was his temperament, despite "hundreds of millions of dollars" being spent by Clinton's campaign on attack adverts about this subject.

I have a winning temperament. I know how to win. She does not know how to win. The AF of L CIO, the other day behind the blue screen — I don't know who you were talking to, Secretary Clinton — but you were totally out of control. I said there's a person with a temperament that's got a problem.

Hillary paused to say:

Whoo! Okay!

Followed by this shoulder wiggle:

Which immediately drew comparisons to the legendary .gif of Shaquille O'Neal and the cat.

She then cited her work on the Iran nuclear deal and made a point about Nato's Article 5, before addding:

A man who can be provoked by a tweet should not have his fingers anywhere near the nuclear codes, as far as I think anyone with any sense about this should be concerned.
