BBC presenter spots a blue whale, cuts off interview, goes wild

Presenter Steve Backshall cut off a live interview on the BBC's Big Blue Live on Sunday night after spotting one of the finest sights in the natural world.

Filming in Monterey Bay, California, the presenter was interviewing local whale expert Doris Welch when word suddenly came through on his earphone that a blue whale had been spotted nearby.

"This is one of the most extraordinary things I’ve ever seen," Backshall explains excitedly to the camera.

Blue whales, the largest animals ever known to have lived on the planet, were hunted almost to extinction but have made a remarkable comeback after conservation efforts.

These animals have made such an extraordinary comeback. This is something that every single person should look at and take notice of. If we take care of places, they will come back.
