Demi Lovato has found herself in hot water after unnecessarily bringing up Breonna Taylor’s name in order to tell critics to focus on that rather than purported screenshots of her fiancé Max Ehrich's old social media posts.
Taylor was a Black woman who was shot and killed by police officers in her home in Louisville, Kentucky earlier this year. Her death, alongisde George Floyd’s murder, has sparked many Black Lives Matters demonstrations as people seek justice.
Things first got a little sticky for Lovato and Ehrich when online users shared around images this weekend that made Ehrich look shady.
Users claimed that they were screenshots of the actor's social media posts about Selena Gomez, Lovato's childhood friend, making it appear as though he sent flirtatious comments to her, and that Gomez and made some unfavourable comments about Lovato.
On Sunday, the singer, who began dating Ehrich earlier this year and got engaged to him in July, called the images "fake" in a now-deleted statement on Instagram, where she said:
Don't y'all have more important shit to write about in 2020??? I challenge any tabloid that dares to type my name to mention Breonna Taylor and the fact that her murderers still haven't been arrested. WRITE ABOUT THAT.
Although the singer has been supportive of the BLM movement before many fans thought it was inappropriate for Lovato to include Taylor's name in a statement protecting her man, a white man, from internet trolls.
In conclusion: it may have been best not to mention Taylor’s name at all.
