On Wednesday, president Donald Trump re-tweeted an image calling for his opponents to face trial for 'treason', with many of them shown behind bars as if they were criminals locked in prison.

The image was tweeted from the pro-Trump @The_Trump_Train account, and shows prominent political figures behind bars, including Barack Obama, Bill and Hillary Clinton, special council Robert Mueller, and former FBI director James Comey.

Others in the image include Huma Abedin, Eric Holder, Loretta Lynch, John Podesta and James Clapper. Several people in the image were targetted with mailed explosives allegedly from a Trump supporter only last month.

The picture is also captioned with the phrase:

Now that Russia collusion is a proven lie, when do the trials for treason begin?

The tweet comes just two days after Robert Mueller accused former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort of lying in his plea agreement, and then asking for his sentence to be expedited in light of new information, reports the Daily Dot.

A report in the Guardian also alleges that Manafort met with Wikileaks founder Julian Assange, who leaked stolen emails from the Clinton campaign in 2016, which Assange denies.

Trump on Monday lashed out at Mueller on Twitter, referring to him as a 'conflicted prosecutor gone rogue', following the new Mueller allegations.

In a tweet, he wrote:

The Phony Witch Hunt continues, but Mueller and his gang of Angry Dems are only looking at one side, not the other.

Wait until it comes out how horribly & viciously they are treating people, ruining lives for them refusing to lie. Mueller is a conflicted prosecutor gone rogue....

In a series of tweets, Trump also accused Mueller of causing 'tremendous' damage to the criminal justice system, as well as 'only looking at one side and not the other' in his investigation.

Trump has been criticising the Mueller probe all week on Twitter, sharing his displeasure with it and referring to it as a 'witch hunt'.
