Food price levels are highest in Switzerland, while the UK is the tenth most expensive in the European Union, according to data from Eurostat.

The data comes from a survey of 440 comparable products across food, beverages and tobacco.

Alcohol in Ireland was around 75 per cent above the EU average, while it was 36 per cent below in Bulgaria.

Tobacco was highest in the UK (119 per cent above the EU average), while it was lowest in Bulgaria (50 per cent below).

So, basically, for booze and cigarettes, go to Bulgaria.

Here's the data breakdown:

Within the EU Denmark is the most expensive country for bread and cereals, meat and fish, whilst Cyprus is the most expensive for milk, cheese and eggs.

Among all 38 countries Romania is the cheapest country for bread and cereals, Albania for meat, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia for fish, while Poland is cheapest for dairy products.

The lowest price level for bread and cereals is found in Romania, for meat, milk, cheese and eggs in Poland and for fish in Bulgaria.
