The Sun published another offensive Liverpool column. Gary Lineker responded perfectly

It seems journalist Kelvin MacKenzie never learns when it comes to Liverpool.

The former editor of the Sun is reviled in the city after the paper’s notorious coverage of the 1989 Hillsborough disaster, where 96 people sadly died.

The paper falsely claimed that drunken Liverpool fans were responsible for the crush, and even that some had picked the pockets of the dead and urinated on police.

To this day many newsagents in Liverpool still refuse to stock the tabloid.

And on the eve of the 28th anniversary of the Hillsborough tragedy, MacKenzie has sparked yet more outrage in an inflammatory column about Everton midfielder Ross Barkley, who was reportedly assaulted in a Liverpool bar.

MacKenzie wrote of Barkley:

The reality is that at £60,000 a week and being both thick and single, he is an attractive catch in the Liverpool area, where the only men with similar pay packets are drug dealers and therefore not at nightclubs, as they are often guests of Her Majesty.

Many people have responded with fury to the article on Twitter, but we think Gary Lineker best sums up the mood:

In response to the column, published in the Sun today, Liverpool mayor Joe Anderson has urged Everton FC to ban the Sun from all matches and press conferences, as Liverpool FC currently do.
