A former White House official said George HW Bush didn’t attend his own funeral and people are confused

Past US presidents and politicians both former and present attended the funeral of George HW Bush.

The senior Bush, who was the 41st president of the United States was honoured in a funeral service at Washington National Cathedral following three days of mourning in which his body lay at the Capital Rotunda.

Donald Trump attended the funeral, along with four living ex-presidents – Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, Bush’s son George W Bush and Barack Obama.

In addition, all the living vice presidents of the past decades attended to pay their respects: Walter Mondale, Dan Quayle, Al Gore, Dick Cheney, Joe Biden and Mike Pence.

According to former White House Press Secretary Ari Fleischer, all vice presidents since 1977 attended the sombre affair, except George HW Bush, who served as VP from 1981 to 1989.

The tweet generated lots of…confusion online

People aren't quite sure what Fleischer meant...

Mainly because...George HW Bush is the one who died.

It was a decidedly bizarre take on the funeral

People tried to work out if there was some deeper meaning to Fleischer's tweet

But they came up short

It has to be noted, however, that Fleischer did tweet a follow up 10 mins later expressing his condolences for HW Bush

The tweet was a rare moment of levity in the sombre affair. As of the writing of this article, the tweet is still up, and people are still waiting for an explanation.
