Cast your mind back to the early 2000s.

Long before the days of Brangelina, Kim and Kanye, Beyonce and Jay-Z there was one major celebrity couple and they were collectively known as Bennifer.

Between 2002 and 2004, Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez were the "It couple" and were extensively covered by the media, who were basically obsessed with their every movement.

In all fairness there was plenty to be obsessed with.

They appeared in a couple of universally derided movies, Gigli and Jersey Girl.

Let's not forget about the now infamous music video for Jennifer's song Jenny from the Block.

The two were only together for 18 months in total (it seemed like a lot longer) and were engaged.

However, the engagement was called off in 2004 and very little has been said about it ever since.

According to the Mirror, Ben blamed the split on the constant media scrutiny of himself and several movies that badly performed at the box office.

In 2006 he was quoted as saying:

If you went by what people said … I wasn’t cool and I wasn’t talented and I was, like, the lowest run of cool and talented that you could possibly be in the public consciousness at that time.

I had broken up with Jennifer Lopez and I had, like, three of four movies in a row that had bombed.

13 years later Jennifer has now given her account of what happened.

Although it isn't exactly the same as Ben's statement, the high-profile attention on the two is once again present.

Speaking to Vanity Fairthe 48-year-old said:

I lost my sense of self, questioned if I belonged in this business, thought maybe I did suck at everything.

And my relationship [with Ben] self-destructed in front of the entire world. It was a two-year thing for me until I picked myself up again.

Following her split from Ben, Jennifer married her friend Marc Anthony in 2004 but the marriage only lasted until 2014.

She is now dating New York Yankee's baseball star Alex Rodriguez.

Meanwhile, Affleck married the actress Jennifer Garner in 2004 but announced their intentions to divorce in 2015.
