Melania Trump has responded to the haters trolling her red Christmas trees that she's used to decorate the White House this festive season, by simply dismissing them.

When Trump posted a minute-long trailer about the decorations on Monday, they were instantly criticised and mocked online, with unflattering comparisons to The Handmaid's Tale and The Shining abounding on Twitter, and others calling them 'creepy'.

However, while speaking at an event at Liberty University in Lynchberg, Virginia, on Wednesday, Trump seemed unfazed, adopting the stance of 'I really don't care, do you?'

The first lady was at the event to discuss opioid addiction as part of her Be Best campaign, when she was asked about the criticism her crimson decorations had received.

Answering, she said:

We are 21st century and everybody has a different taste. I think they look fantastic.

She added:

In real life they look more beautiful and you're all very welcome to visit the White House, the people's house.

When Trump unveiled the decorations, they received instant online backlash.

Many compared them to the red Handmaid's Tale outfits synonymous with sexual slavery, or the blood that flows down the hallway in the 80s film The Shining.

Some even thought about Dr Seuss' story of deforestation, 'The Lorax'.

Unfortunately for Trump, her Christmas trees were subjected to similar mocking last year when they were unveiled, with many saying the decorations were more appropriate for Halloween.
