Republicans compare Mitt Romney to 'Judas' after standing up to Trump and voting for impeachment

Mitt Romney sent shockwaves through the Republican party on Wednesday, when he became their only member to stand up to Donald Trump and vote for his removal from office.

Speaking damningly of the president and fighting back tears, Romney said:

Does anyone seriously believe that I would consent to these consequences, other than from an inescapable conviction that my oath before God demanded it of me?

Corrupting an election to keep oneself in office is perhaps the most abusive and destructive violation of one’s oath of office that I can imagine.

Although Romney's actions were not successful in swaying other Republicans on changing their votes as Trump was acquitted on two articles of impeachment.

As you can imagine, his intervention has angered a lot of partizan Trump supporters, most notably Fox Business host Lou Dobbs, who claimed that Romney will now be mentioned in the same breath to other traitors like 'Judas, Brutus and Benedict Arnold forever.'

Elsewhere, the president's 42-year-old son, Donald Trump Jr shared a meme of Romney wearing 'Mom jeans' as he is apparently 'a pussy.' What a smart and intelligent thing for an adult man with five children to say.

Others such as Fox News' Laura Ingraham, former Republican presidential candidate and Superman actor Dean Cain amongst others all took to social media to critcise Romney.

Even Trump tweeted a video which called Romney a 'Democrat secret asset' after Barack Obama defeated him in the 2012 election.

Regardless his bold act of defiance saw him praised by critics of the president, most notably Stephen Colbert who asked why Romney couldn't be president in the opening monologue of his show.
