Surreal footage of a woman performing aerobics routine outdoors in Myanmar has gone viral, as she appears to be completely unaware of the military coup that is happening directly behind her.
The video was reportedly filmed on Monday morning, as the coup in the Asian nation was just beginning. It provides a bizarre juxtaposition of a woman doing her fitness routine alone to high tempo music, while a convoy of armoured vehicles drive into the distance behind her.
The woman has since been identified as Khing Hnin Wai, who is a physical education teacher employed by Mynamar’s Ministry of Education.
The footage has gone massively viral and has already been viewed more than 10 million times on Twitter with some comparing it to an almost avant-garde piece of theatre and the type of imagery seen in documentaries about societies continuing descent in the abyss.
It really does sum up the past few years in more ways than one.

There were suggestions that the video had somehow been doctored and the woman was dancing in front of a green screen. However, online sleuths soon seemed to debunk this by finding the exact location in the capital city of Naypyitaw, where she was doing the aerobics.

Monday’s coup by the Myanmar military, who are alleging voter fraud following November’s election, led to the arrest of the nation’s leader Aung San Suu Kyi, whose party has asked the general public to reject the coup. World leaders such as Joe Biden and Boris Johnson have condemned the imprisonment of Ms Suu Kyi.
