Paris, France, was witness to the truly devastating scene as the iconic Notre Dame cathedral caught fire, which destroyed the roof of the historic landmark.
As the blaze ripped through the cathedral, thousands of Parisians and tourists lined the bridges and surrounding areas of the building to witness the fire.
The sombre moment soon turned into something truly powerful as onlookers began to say prayers and sing hymns, with many situated just outside the Saint-Julien-le-Pauvre church, which is located just metres away from Notre Dame.
The singers sang a rendition of Ave Maria in French while the blaze enveloped the cathedral, striking a stark contrast between the emotions of the events that were unfurling.
French journalist Ignacio Gil shared the footage online, which has since gone viral and - at the time of writing - has been viewed more than 11 million times.
The footage has been shared all over Twitter, with many people offering their sympathies to the French people.
Other footage of the singers has also been viewed thousands of times on Twitter.
