In a shock announcement, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have said that they are to “step back as ‘senior’ members of the royal family”.
In a dramatic twist which followed days of reports, Harry and Meghan said that they will work to become “financially independent” in future.
The news follows widespread speculation the couple want to move to Canada, where Markle worked as an actress.
In the statement, they said:
After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution.
We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen.
The couple then hinted at a move across the Atlantic, before thanking people for their support.
But it’s no secret that not everyone has been supportive.
Since the pair met, they have been subjected to intense media scrutiny. Many people have observed the racial “undertones” of the treatment of Markle in particular, who describes herself as “biracial”.
Following the shock announcement, lots of people wished the couple well.
Many also lamented how Markle has been treated.
But others weren’t convinced, particularly by the claim that the pair will become “financially independent”.
Are they trying to have it both ways?
