Scotland and England: it’s a friendly rivalry that goes back decades (to when it was a little less friendly).

But when it comes to the handling of the coronavirus crisis, there’s no arguing about who has done a better job (clue: it’s definitely not England).

While Boris Johnson’s “stay alert” message, which eased lockdown, was mocked and ridiculed, Nicola Sturgeon held firm and kept lockdown in place for longer. When lockdown was further eased in England, which many suspect had a little something to do with distracting from a certain Mr Cummings, Scotland again chose to keep more restrictions in place.

But now the news has broken that Scotland had recorded no deaths from coronavirus in the last three days.

Professor Devi Sridhar from Edinburgh University says she believes Scotland is "on track" to be free of the virus soon, which is a remarkable achievement considering that cases are now rising south of the border.

It’s also been reported that Sturgeon is being urged to consider a 14 day quarantine for tourists travelling from Scotland to England.

There could even be fines of £480 if people don't comply.

Naturally, the reaction to these reports is pretty split online. Some people think it’s fair enough, seeing as Scotland is its own country which is clearly reaping the benefits of a sensible pandemic strategy.

But some people (many of whom appear to be from England) don't seem happy about it at all.

The Scottish government hasn't announced any firm decision on this yet. And it remains to be seen how this would work with essential goods and key workers who have to work across borders. It's also true that this isn't necessarily a restriction on "English people", as lots of English people live in Scotland and any quarantine would apply to Scottish people living in England as strictly as it would anyone else.

But it looks like even a pandemic can't distract from the long-held tension between these two British nations.
