Donald Trump has been President of the United States for an entire year.

In the wake of his shocking victory in November 2016, the country and the world were left reeling... But not everybody was surprised.

In fact, we got fair warning in a Simpsons episode which aired in March 2000, 17 years ago.

The episode, titled ‘Bart to the Future’ features Bart, who travels to the not-so-distant future: his sister Lisa is the first female president of the US, and while in office says the following to her aides, who told her that America was bankrupt as a result of her predecessor, president Donald Trump:

We’ve inherited quite a budget crunch from President Trump.

Writer Dan Greaney told The Hollywood Reporter:

It was a warning to America.

That just seemed like the logical last stop before hitting bottom. It was pitched because it was consistent with the vision of America going insane.

We had fair warning, people.
