The average hourly expenditure on labour across the EU was €24.60 (£17.86) in 2014, but that figure hides the huge disparity between countries.
As this chart from Statista, using data from Eurostat shows, employers in Denmark paid €40.30 (£29.26) per hour while those in Bulgaria paid just €3.80 (£2.76).
Interestingly, the figures, which exclude data from agriculture and public administration, show that employers in Britain paid below the EU average to their workers - although the figure of €22.30 (£16.20) did rise by 6.7 per cent between 2013 and 2014.
