‘What’s your New Year’s resolution?” It’s a standard question you might be asked around the turn of the year.
But for Donald Trump, it’s one that – bizarrely – he can't seem to answer.
When the president of the United States and his wife Melania Trump were asked about their New Year’s resolutions by a reporter, Melania replied first with “Peace on the world.”
Donald himself then followed up with “Peace is right but I'm not sure you're supposed to say a resolution out loud, OK.”
The US president went on to say:
So I don’t want to say what my resolution is because I think we jinx it, alright. But I can tell you we really have a good resolution and it’s a resolution for our country.
It seems that Trump is confusing New Year’s resolutions with birthday wishes which, according to superstition, you’re supposed to keep a secret. But a resolution (an intention or course of action you decide to take) is different to a wish (a desire for something).
And as president of the United States, Trump certainly has the power to both contribute to “peace on the world” and do something 'good' for his country.
