Adele wrote a baffling open letter and no-one's sure what to make of it

Adele has announced that her first single in three years will be dropping next week and confirmed a new album, 25, is also imminent - and my word, are we excited about it.

The 27-year-old singer wrote an open letter to fans apologising for the long wait since she last released any music. (The only snippet we've had is a 30-second clip of a new song released earlier this week:)

21 was a break up album, Adele writes. And she said that "if I had to label this one I’d call it a make-up record".

Is it just us or does Adele sound like pretty much every other millennial in the throes of a quarter-life crisis?

"25 is about getting to know who I've become without realising", Adele wrote.

And I'm sorry it took so long but, you know, life happened.

Stereogum called Adele's note a “personal but vague statement” and over at Jezebel Mark Shrayber said "After reading this twice, I still have no idea what’s going on":

[Adele's letter] is either an album announcement or a thinly veiled set of clues that reveals that the singer’s discography has something to do with solving The Da Vinci Code. (19, 21, Adele Live at the Royal Albert Hall, and now 25??? Is no one else noticing the pattern? Wake up, sheeple!)

We can guarantee one thing, though: when the new album does finally drop, a lot of people are going to buy it.
