Science has finally discovered which Fast and the Furious film is the 'most fast and the most furious'

Fast & Furious 6 is apparently the "most fast and furious" film in the franchise, according to extensive research by a Reddit user.

37-year-old movie writer Mark Hofmeyer ranked the nine existent Fast & Furious films, including the Hobbs and Shaw spin-off, in 28 categories to draw his conclusion, including 'racing time', 'time spent talking about cars' and the number of gear shifts.

The action movie franchise is notoriously formulaic, with car chases, gunshots and explosions in every installment but it's an undeniable method that has seen the series become one of the most profitable in movie history.

In a Reddit post upvoted almost 15,000 times, Hoymeyer wrote:

In honour of Fast 9’s original release date (May 22, 2020), I decided to see which Fast movie is the most Fast & Furious. Basically, I wanted to know which of the Fast films has the most races, fights, NOS, corona, BBQ, property destruction, gratuitous party shots, and mentions of family.

I ranked each of the nine installments (1-9) according to where they placed in each category.

So, a lower score means more classic Fast & Furious elements. For instance, Tokyo Drift features over 15 minutes of racing so it got the top score of 1 for 'driving', whilst Hobbs and Shaw had no official race so it got the worst score of 19.

By this slightly convoluted metric, Fast and Furious 6 was crowned the most classic film of the franchise, followed by Furious 7 and 2 Fast 2 Furious.

Hofmeyer, a 37-year-old movie fanatic from Atlanta, Georgia, said that rewatching all of the movies to compile the data "never felt like work" because he loves the films.

I love how the franchise has evolved from a scrappy Point Break-esque story into blockbuster films. I love the international cast, and the focus on "family".

He has written before on some of the less obvious tropes of the Fast & Furious films, including the characters' fondness for throwing barbecues and swigging coronas.

His full ranking of fastness and furiousness in the Fast & Furious films is as follows.

  • Fast & Furious 6 – 79 points - Winner
  • Furious 7 – 87 points
  • 2 Fast 2 Furious – 88 points
  • The Fast and the Furious – 92 points
  • Fast Five – 99 points
  • Fast and Furious – 102 points
  • The Fate of the Furious – 106 points
  • Fast and Furious: Tokyo Drift – 113 points
  • Fast and Furious Presents: Hobbs and Shaw – 130 points.

The next installment in the franchise was scheduled to be released this month, but has been delayed until 2 April 2021 because of the coronavirus pandemic.
