John Oliver doesn’t tend to hold back when it comes to Donald Trump, so naturally, he had had a lot to say after news broke that the President was planning to purchase Greenland.
Trump recently confirmed that he had asked an aide to look into whether the US could purchase Greenland as a strategic move – ”essentially a large real estate deal”. Of course, people from Greenland reacted in horror.
“Yeah, of course, he f**king did. Of course he did,” said Oliver on Last Week Tonight. He went on:
Greenland is icy, distant, and semi-autonomous – it’s exactly Trump’s type.
If just what he meant by that wasn’t obvious enough, he then showed a photo of Trump’s wife Melania.
He continued:
Now, speculation on Trump’s comments rose to such a point this week that Greenland’s premier had to issue a statement saying, ‘Greenland is not for sale,’ so, if you had 2 1/2 years in your office pool of ‘when a world leader would have to tell Trump you can’t buy our country,’ congratulations, you’re a big winner.
Oliver went on to criticise Trump’s comments about Hong Kong. Discussing the recent riots, Trump said:
Somebody said that at some point they’re going to want to stop that, but that’s between Hong Kong and that’s between China, because Hong Kong is a part of China.
While it doesn’t currently look as if Trump will have much luck buying Greenland, he has continued to push his idea that owning Greenland is “hurting Denmark very badly”, something which has not been proven.
