Kevin Hart refused to apologise for his homophobic tweets and people aren't impressed

Comedian and actor Kevin Hart has stepped down as the host of next year's Academy Awards after a series of homophobic tweets came to light.

Tweets dating back to 2009 show Hart using homophobic language to either insult others or make 'jokes' about his son playing with a doll's house.

Hart, who is a major star in Hollywood, had reportedly used similar rhetoric in stand-up routines that he performed nearly 10 years ago.

Once news began to circulate of these tweets' existence they were quickly deleted and Hart then posted an Instagram video where he basically refused to apologise for the tweets.

My team calls me, ‘Oh my God, Kevin, everyone’s upset by tweets you did years ago.' 

Guys, I’m nearly 40 years old. If you don’t believe that people change, grow, evolve as they get older, I don’t know what to tell you.

If you want to hold people in a position where they always have to justify the past, do you. I’m the wrong guy, man.

If that wasn't bad enough Hart followed it up with another video where he reiterated his stance and stated that the Academy had given him an ultimatum.

This didn't improve his situation and resulted in Hart making a more formal apology on Twitter and announced that he would be withdrawing himself as host of the Oscars.

It remains to be seen what the fallout from this will be for Hart but the immediate response to his non-apology has been less than forgiving, with some suggesting that he refused to apologise because of the wage he would have received from the hosting gig.

A statement that Hart gave to Rolling Stone in 2015 has also begun to be shared again, where the star attempted to address the comments.

Some have tried to defend Hart's comments and his apology.

The US-based organisation, GLAAD which monitors LGBT defamation have stated that they are willing to work with Hart and the Academy for a better overall presentation of LGBT people.

This entire story has also sparked another conversation and the hosts of the Oscars and who they represent.
