Time magazine released a list of leading female writers and still managed to include a man

On Thursday, Time magazine published a list of the most-read female authors in college classes across the US.

The article points out that male writers dominate academic syllabi and that the first female author on the list of most-read (Kate L Turabian) doesn't actually come in until number 18.

It then goes on to publish a filtered list of the 100 most popular female authors - listing the likes of Jane Austen, Virginia Woolf and George Eliot.

The article notes:

TIME aggregated the top 10,000 titles by author, then used the Notable Names Database to confirm the author’s gender and generate a list of 100 most-read female authors.

Intriguingly, down at number 97 is the author of Brideshead Revisited, A Handful of Dust and Scoop - Evelyn Waugh.

As many, many people have pointed out, perhaps there's been a mistake.
