'Perfect casting': Kathryn Hahn to play Mother Gothel in Tangled live-action film

The wait is finally over as Disney has announced who will be playing Mother Gothel in their Tangled live-action film, and the internet has praised the choice as the "perfect casting."

Following previous rumours that she was in talks, it has now been confirmed that Kathryn Hahn will take on the role of antagonist Mother Gothel, who hides Rapunzel away from the world and utilises the healing powers of Rapunzel's long blond hair.

Taking to Instagram, Hahn announced the news in a video where she did an OOTD (outfit of the day), showing off her Mother Gothel t-shirt.

"Just another day," she quipped at the end of the video, and has since changed her Instagram bio to "mother knows best," Mother Gothel's villain song.

Given that Hahn has often been fan-cast to play Mother Gothel by fans of the original film, it's fair to say people were delighted at the news that their vision was coming true.

One person wrote, "Jesus has been casted in the live action of Bible."

"This is like Margot Robbie as Barbie level of perfect casting," a second person wrote.

A third person posted, "This is the equivalent of Elle Fanning being casted as Effie Trinket."

"I'm not apologizing for the person I will become the moment she sings Mother Knows Best," a fourth person commented.

Who has been cast in the film?

There has been much speculation on who should play the spirited and daring young princess with long magical hair and the arrogant, charismatic thief who helps Rapunzel escape her tower, where she was held prisoner.

Of course, there have been plenty of fan casts on the internet.

In January, Disney announced that Teagan Croft will play Rapunzel, while Milo Manheim will play Flynn Rider, as per The Hollywood Reporter.

Croft is best known for her appearances as Rachel/White Raven on Titans (2018 -2023) and Manheim best-known for his role as Zed in the Disney TV film franchise Zombies. He currently plays Wally in the Paramount+ series School Spirits and he starred as Seymour in a revival of Little Shop of Horrors. Plus, Manheim also took part in Dancing With the Stars in Season 27 where he was runner-up.

Tangled is the latest Disney animation to get the live-action treatment, with previous films including The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Mulan, Dumbo, The Little Mermaid, Snow White and Lilo & Stitch, while live-action Moana, is set to be released in cinemas this July.

What else do we know about Tangled live-action?

Michael Gracey is directing the film, and his previous work includes musical biopics Better Man and The Greatest Showman, and just like the original animation, we can expect the musical elements in the live-action.

Who voiced the original animated film?

The original 2010 animated Tangled film was voiced by Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi, and the film, which made over $591 million worldwide, has gone on to become a beloved classic among fans.

It also saw the release of the 2012 short film Tangled Ever After and Disney Channel series Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventure.

When will the live-action be released?

As the casting of the main leads and Mother Gothel have been announced, and with filming yet to begin, there has been no official confirmation as to when the Tangled live-action will be released.
