Gary Lineker has been presented with his very own Sophie's Choice in the form of a simple question; would he rather the country was saved from Brexit or Diego Maradona’s handball was spotted by the referee at the 1986 World Cup?
On James O’Brien’s LBC Radio show, the host asked the former England poacher:
If I could give you a magic wand and you could reverse either the result of Brexit or the result of the 1986 Argentina game where Maradona cheated, which result would you most like to reverse?
Lineker was clearly impressed with the question and O’Brien was good enough to credit the member of staff who concocted the question.
After some negotiation about whether this would mean England would definitely go on to win the World Cup, Lineker put his country before personal glory.
I would like to take it back maybe three years and just eradicate everything, I just think we've turned into such a kind of hateful place, it's so sad to see, and for what? For what?
The Match of the Day presenter eventually admitted he felt that was the right thing to say and in reality like he’d want the goal disallowed.
Obviously deep down inside of me I'm thinking, 'World Cup, World Cup'. 1990 would probably have been better.
It would be good if there was at least one realm in which cheating was not rewarded.
