Outer Banks prequel series announced - everything we know so far

The final season of Outer Banks has been released, but it seems we're not quite done with this story just yet.

The Netflix series follows two groups of teenagers (the "Pogues" working class locals and "Kooks" the wealthy upper class residents) in the coastal Outer Banks of North Carolina who are on the hunt of a lost treasure - and all the action drama that arises from this adventure.

Season 5 sees the return of stars Chase Stokes (John B.), Madelyn Cline (Sarah Cameron), Madison Bailey (Kiara), Jonathan Daviss (Pope), Carlacia Grant (Cleo), Drew Starkey (Rafe), Austin North (Topper), Fiona Palomo (Sofia), J. Anthony Crane (Chandler Groff) and Cullen Moss (Shoupe).

The show first premiered in 2020 and has since concluded with its fifth season which released on the streaming platform on August 20.

Is a prequel series happening?

Now a prequel series is in the works which will be set 20 years prior to the events that occur in Outer Banks and will "explore the origins of Kildare’s deep social divide," Deadline reported.

“We’re working on the script,” co-creator Josh Pate told the publication. "We’re working hard on it with our awesome partners from Netflix, and we’re just trying to get all of it as good as it can be.”

“It really is the story of how the island split — and it’s particularly relevant in our country right now — how it split into the haves and have-nots, how the Kooks and the Pogues started,” he added. “How did this rift start?”

Shannon Burke, co-creator also said, “And seen through the stories of some of the characters you know and some new characters. But they’re 20 years before, so it’s the parents’ generation."

Given it is still in the works at the moment, there is no official release date - but we'll be keeping our eyes out for updates.
