Indian villagers reportedly thought the heavy balls of ice falling from the sky were precious meteorites.

But officials have warned that the pieces are actually probably chunks of frozen human waste.

The 10 - 12 kg (22 - 25lbs) blocks fell on the northern village of Fazilpur Badli on Saturday.

The Times of Indiareported that some people stored the waste in their fridges, just in case it proved valuable.

Vivek Kalia, a senior official at the nearby city of Gurgaon told the BBC that they "suspect strongly" that it is frozen airline excrement,

It was a very heavy icy ball of ice which dropped from the skies early on Saturday morning. There was big thud and people of the village came running out of their homes to find out what had happened.

Some villagers thought it was an extra-terrestrial object. Others thought it was some celestial rock and I've heard that they took samples home.

Discoloured ice that falls from the sky is commonly referred to as 'blue ice'.

Plane toilets store human waste in tanks that are normally disposed of once the plane has landed, but the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) admits leaks can happen.

In December, India announced that it would fine airlines if their planes released human waste in the air above the country.
