The viral sensation that was Grumpy Cat has sadly passed away at the tender age of seven, its owners have revealed, and the internet is in mourning.

Known to her family as Tardar Sauce, the permanently peeved cat's owners said in a statement issued to their Twitter account that the famous feline had passed away peacefully on Tuesday morning.

In the statement, they said:

Despite care from top professionals, as well as from her very loving family, Grumpy encountered complications from a recent urinary tract infection, that unfortunately became too tough for her to overcome.

She passed away peacefully on the morning of Tuesday 14, in the arms of her mommy, Tabatha.

They added:

Besides being our baby and a cherished member of the family, Grumpy Cat has helped millions of people smile all around the world – even when times were tough.

Her spirit will continue to live on through her fans everywhere.

As soon as the sad news broke, people took to Twitter to share their memories of the iconic Instagram moggie.

There was also a general outpouring of grief.

Grumpy Cat shot to fame in 2012 when the brother of her owner Tabatha Bundesen posted a picture of her to Reddit, highlighting her permanently grumpy face, and she soon became a meme.

In 2014, she was even the subject of a movie titled Grumpy Cat's Worst Christmas Ever, which was a made-for-television feature broadcast on US network Lifetime, reports the Mirror.

All we can say is, RIP, Grumpy, you and your permanent scowl will be missed.
