Michel de Nostradame (or Nostradamus colloquially) was a French physician and astrologer from the sixteenth century.

He wrote more than 1,000 predictions about the world, sometimes hundreds of years into the future.

Called Les Propheties, he wrote these predictions in four line poems. They were published in 10 volumes, each of which were referred to as a ‘century’.

Hundreds of years after his death in 1566, Nostradamus is believed, by some, to have predicted: the French revolution, World War Two, and the 11 September attacks on New York City.

Here are the Nostradamus predications some have linked to actual events. a few are far in the past, while others are much closer to our time.

1. Death of Henry II

The young lion will overcome the older one,

On the field of combat in a single battle;

He will pierce his eyes through a golden cage,

Two wounds made one, then he dies a cruel death

King Henry II of France died in 1559 after Gabriel, comte de Montgomery accidently killed him during a game of joust. Both had lions on their shields, and a shard of the latter man's lance went through his eye, while another shot through his temple. It took him 10 days to die.

2. The rise of Hitler

From the depths of the West of Europe,

A young child will be born of poor people,

He who by his tongue will seduce a great troop;

His fame will increase towards the realm of the East.

Adolf Hitler was born 20 April 1889 in Western Europe. He moved to Germany a few years later and rose to fame in part due to his furious speeches.

3. The atomic bomb

Near the gates and within two cities

There will be scourges the like of which was never seen,

Famine within plague, people put out by steel,

Crying to the great immortal God for relief.

In August 1945 America dropped an atomic bomb on Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki (two cities).

4. The September 11 Attacks

Earthshaking fire from the center of the Earth

Will cause tremors around the New City.

Two great rocks will war for a long time,

Then Arethusa will redden a new river

5. Donald Trump

The great shameless, audacious bawler,

He will be elected governor of the army:

The boldness of his contention,

The bridge broken, the city faint from fear

A stretch? Maybe. Or maybe it is him, given that in addition to being President, Mr Trump is also the Commander-in-Chief.

6. A weakened West

Twice put up and twice cast down,

the East will also weaken the West.

Its adversary after several battles

chased by sea will fail at time of need.

This could refer to the current tension between America (west) and Russia (east).
