On Friday, Republican senator Susan Collins confirmed that she would be supporting Brett Kavanaugh's controversial nomination as Supreme Court justice.
Kavanaugh has been accused of sexual assault by at least two women and has been under investigation by the FBI.
Before officially announcing her support, Collins gave a 45-minute speech which detailed her thought process behind her decision before eventually saying:
My fervent hope is that Brett Kavanaugh will work to lessen the divisions in the Supreme Court so we have far fewer 5-4 decisions and so that public confidence in our judiciary and our highest court is restored.
Mr. President, I will vote to confirm Judge Kavanaugh.
As one of the most prominent women on the senate, there had been hopes that Collins would make a stand and show support for sexual assault victims.
Yet, her decision to support Kavanaugh saw her branded a betrayer of women by celebrities on Twitter.
Elsewhere on Twitter people started to make jokes out of the situation, presumably to calm their anger.
Others made light of how long it took her to make her announcement.
Elsewhere a crowdfunding campaign for Collins Democratic opponent in 2020 has since seen donations skyrocket after she voted 'yes' on Kavanaugh.
