This is how much tea we in Britain drink each week (spoiler alert: it's a lot)

The average Briton drinks an impressive 876 cups of tea a year, enough to fill more than two bathtubs.

A Contact the Elderly-commissioned study by YouGov found that the number of cups drank within a week increases with age.

So what is it that's so great about tea? Across all generations and genders, tea is considered to combat sadness and loneliness.

Over half of adults polled said they associated tea with comfort, and the majority found a nice warm brew to be relaxing.

Almost a third (30 per cent) of women said they drank tea when they were unwell, in comparison to only 16 per cent of men.

The findings also show almost a quarter of young people were likely to turn to tea when feeling sad, twice the number of over 55s who said they'd do the same.
