This photographer has captured what people look like when they're watching porn

Trinidad-born photographer Patrick Struys asks a lot of the people he photographs.

Now based in New York, his latest series involves sitting his subjects in a viewing booth, where he photographs them through a peephole.

They are photographed topless while watching five and a half minutes of pornography, which Struys has personally assembled.

Struys told indy100 that he was inspired to make the series by his friends’ reactions to sex scenes when watching films:

I thought it was fascinating how different people reacted, processed and expressed themselves around sex when it was presented to them in a ‘public environment’.

Struys said that he wasn’t expecting people to lower their guard during the shoot:

Initially people did laugh and smile. However, usually about two or three minutes in is when I would get their more 'honest’ or 'natural reactions'.

I believe my presence as a straight man heavily influenced the results. It seemed as though women and gay men were much more comfortable expressing their sexuality in front of a straight man behind the camera.

I wasn’t expecting to encounter as many of those moments. I tended to get ‘less-performative’ reactions from the females and gay men.

All the straight men seemed very uncomfortable watching the film with me present and expressed this by laughing, joking and talking throughout the entire shoot.

Struys says he doesn’t have any immediate plans to exhibit the series but is thinking about how to expand the series in future:

I would like to shoot more portraits and add some video/multimedia components to create a complete exhibition.

I would want people attending the exhibition to be as much a part of the experiment as the subjects in the photos.
