Politicians and commentators are being 'reaped' on Twitter to take part in the Tory Hunger Games and everyone wants to know what the hell is going on.
Two representatives from 13 Conservative factions including hacks, Northerners and villains have been tagged in the Tory Hunger Games and will (apparently) be competing in February.
Piers Morgan and Julia Hartley-Brewer have been reaped as villains whilst Zac Goldsmith and Carrie Symonds have been reaped as Green Tories.
indy100 reached out to the mysterious account behind the Games and can exclusively reveal what the Tory Hunger Games is – and who's behind it.
The actual games will take place on 6-9 February. It will be in the style of a Hunger Games Simulator.
Up until then, the account's purpose is to keep Tory Twitter engaged by any means possible, if it means there is a chance in hell that everyone will stop arguing with different factions.
A Hunger Games simulator, as its name suggests, is a virtual death match that picks off people (represented by their avatar) until only the winner remains.
I got the ides from the secret Tory group chats that operate on the platform. I'm in many different faction group chats so I can see them bitching about the other factions. As probably the only person not entrenched in a faction, I thought everyone needed putting down a peg or two.
The account's creator was inspired to set up the Tory Hunger Games after in fighting over the direction of the Conservative Party broke out amongst different factions of the party after their election win. The majority of reapees are in these 'secret' group chats.
But who is the mysterious figure behind this intriguing and frankly bizarre idea?
James Yucel is an 18-year-old Tory Party member from Ipswich who is studying History at Glasgow University. He is the son of a Turkish immigrant, something he says has "raised a few eyebrows at the local association".
Yucel, who "backed Boris from the beginning", was an election campaign officer for Tory MP Tom Hunt and has interned with other Tory MPs.
The people Yucel chose for reaping are, in a word, perplexed.
Yucel told us what gave him the idea.
I originally got the idea from the games when I couldn't remember if a certain prominent Tory was Blukip or a Liberal. I had this problem with many Tories, so I figured I'd make a graph of every prominent Tory, separated into their factions. I counted 12 factions, which mirrored the 12 districts in the Hunger Games, so I went from there.
While the 2019 election gave the Conservatives a "thumping majority" it seems things aren't so calm behind the scenes. Tory group chats are "factions bitching about other factions" and "a lot of ego-infused dick swinging" Yucel says.
Let the games begin.
