Transport for London believes this "new device" will save Christmas

Just in time for Christmas, Transport for London has come up with a brand new piece of technology that is going to make everything OK.

Introducing the Track Retrievable Device (seriously, that's what it's being called).

To you or me this may look like nothing more than a hook on the end of a stick, but it's actually a wholly "new device" designed - in-house - to cut down on 195,000 hours of delays caused by items dropped on tracks - the number of which increased by 62 per cent between 2009/10 and 2012/13.

Nigel Holness, London Underground operations director Jubilee, Northern and Piccadilly Lines said: "If you drop anything of value on the track, please speak to a member of staff and we will do our best to retrieve it for you. We hope that our staff, using the Track Retrieval Device, will deter customers from attempting to pick up items themselves.

"We want to make sure that everyone enjoys themselves during the festive season and that our customers and staff take care of, and look after, themselves whilst doing so."
