Ocasio-Cortez asks why she should have been 'spirited and warm' during the State of the Union

One of the biggest talking points during Tuesday's State of the Union address was Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez refusing to stand for Donald Trump's speech.

The 29-year-old Democrat's stoic act of defiance against the president was a huge hit on social media, prompting many jokes and memes.

Yet, she herself didn't see the funny side of things, especially when being accused of not being 'spirited and warm' by Peggy Noonan, a columnist for the Wall Street Journal and a former speechwriter for president Ronald Reagan.

Ocasio-Cortez took exception to this critical review of her stance at the State of the Union and replied asking why she should have acted in any way impressed by Trump's speech, calling it an "unsettling night for our country".

Memes attempting to mock Ocasio-Cortez by doctoring a straightjacket onto her body have been shared by US conservatives, with some also choosing to criticise her views on immigration.

Ocasio-Cortez is unlikely to change her reactions to the president, telling the New York Post on Wednesday:

They can get used to it because I won’t be smiling for this president anytime soon.

That being said, it should not be overlooked that she did have some fun at the State of the Union.
