Perhaps limbering up for a presidential run, US vice president Joe Biden has taken aim at the Republican party's supposed homophobia at an event in Washington, DC.
Speaking at the Human Rights Campaign National Dinner on Saturday, the Democrat praised LGBT rights campaigners for their hard work over the years but was clearly unimpressed by his peers in the GOP.
Speaking on progress made by his party and the same-sex marriage bill passed by the Supreme Court earlier this year, Biden, as quoted by The Hill, said:
We become more of what America was meant to be,” Biden said. “All men created equal, all have a right to liberty, pursuit of happiness. We say it so often that it loses its meaning. The very fact that we finally recognize that love is not a political matter, it’s a basic human right — the fact that we’ve recognized that is because of you.”
The VP, who is thought to be considering a leadership bid, then had this zinger for the Republican presidential candidates:
There’s homophobes still left. Most of them are running for president, I think.
