The image, captured by Geert Vanden Wijngaert, was taken at the Brussels Summit on 20 October 2017, ahead of the EU's announcement on whether they would start internal preparatory work on a transition period and trade deal with the UK after Brexit.

It was shared by the Evening Standard's head of pictures Elliot Wagland.
