As police use social media to track down Capitol rioters, dating app Bumble is also proving to be surprisingly fertile ground for discovering insurrectionists.

It started when women in Washington DC started to notice MAGA supporters on dating apps who were clearly in town for the riots.

Twitter user Ali Awadallah noted that it was obvious they were Trump supporters, either because they said it directly or were wearing “MAGA clothing” on their profiles. She then wondered if this information would be useful to law enforcement, and later said that she was on hold with police and FBI.

Others decided to take matters into their own hands. Allison Norris shared that one woman changed her political preference to Conservative and sent the FBI any photos and videos from the insurrection she received from rioters.

Plenty of women jumped at the opportunity to become a real life group of vigilantes.

After Awadallah and Norris’ tweets went viral, Bumble swiftly removed its politics filter to “prevent misuse”, while claiming that it has removed users who were confirmed to be involved with the riots.

Looks like the traps are shut for now. And it’s probably best we let the authorities carry out the necessary work to bring whoever was involved in the riots to justice.
