Donald Trump launched an angry tirade against veteran actress Bette Midler after she apologised for sharing a fake quote attributed to him, and criticised his comments about being "greeted by thousands in the UK".

The award-winning performer, who often drags the US president on Twitter, had apologised on Monday after tweeting a fake Trump quote: "I apologize [sic]; this quote turns out to be a fake from way back in ‘15-16. Don’t know how I missed it, but it sounds SO much like him that I believed it was true! Fact Check: Did Trump say in '98 Republicans are dumb?" she wrote, and tweeted a link of an article that fact-checked the fake quote. The 73-year-old added:

I have to say, it sounded so much like 'All Mexicans are rapists' and 'I’m the greatest President' that I bought it! I think we should investigate who created that tweet! They really captured his tone and his personality! What a textual impersonation!!

A day later she took to Twitter again, this time hitting out at Trump’s claim that he was "greeted by thousands in the UK".

She wrote on Twitter: “Trump said he was greeted by thousands in the UK, but they were actually thousands of protesters. How does he always hear the opposite of the truth? Donald, if you’re reading this you SHOULD NOT slam your d**k in a door!”

Trump caught wind of his latest famous critic and hopped on his favourite social networking service to respond, calling her a "psycho".

He wrote: “Washed up psycho @BetteMidler was forced to apologise for a statement she attributed to me that turned out to be totally fabricated by her in order to make ‘your great president’ look really bad.”

She got caught, just like the Fake News Media gets caught. A sick scammer!

People followed the exchange closely.

Some Twitter users pointed out that at least Midler apologises for her mistakes...

Others loved Bette's response.

And questioned why Trump was up so late at night tweeting about an actress...
