President Trump's eldest son Donald Trump Jr has compared the US Democratic Party to the German Nazi party of the 1930s.

Trump Jr made the comments at a screening of the conservative pundit and filmmaker Dinesh D'Souza's new documentary 'Death of a Nation: Can We Save America a Second Time?', that he attended with his new girlfriend Kimberly Guilfoyle in Washington DC on Tuesday evening.

Speaking to One America News Networkafter the screening, he said:

You see the Nazi platform from the early 1930s... and you look at it compared to the DNC platform of today, you're saying, 'Man, those things are awfully similar' to a point where it's actually scary.

To me that was one of the most striking things I took from the movie because it's the exact opposite that you've been told.

The documentary favourably compares president Trump with Abraham Lincoln, arguing that Trump is the new Lincoln, and references the fact that the Democrats didn't accept president Lincoln's re-election in 1865.

A poster from the documentary merges Donald Trump and Abraham Lincoln's faces.

The movie itself has drawn mainly negative reviews from critics, with theChicago Sun Times calling its argument that Trump is the new Lincoln 'laughable', and the Hollywood Reporter saying that 'even diehard conservatives will throw up their hands'.

In light of backlash to his statements, Trump Jr took to Twitter on Thursday, saying:

So the left spends the last 3 years falsely calling my entire family NAZI's, but the second I point out the similarities between the economic platform of the National Socialists and the Democrat Party, they scream bloody murder.

D'Souza pleaded guilty in 2014 to campaign finance fraud, when he was convicted of exceeding donor limits to Wendy Long, his old college classmate, when she was running against Democratic Senator Kirsten Gillibrand in 2012 for Hillary Clinton's old New York State Senate seat. In May this year, Trump pardoned him. Taking to Twitter, he wrote:

Will be giving a Full Pardon to Dinesh D'Souza today. He was treated very unfairly by our government!
