Melania Trump's tweet about taking care of children drew a mountain of criticism.
A recent damning report found that the Trump administration could have separated thousands of migrant children from their parents at the border.
The report, by the health department’s Office of Inspector General (OIG) said officials at the health department estimated “thousands of separated children” were put in health department care before the 2018 court order to reunify 2,600 children.
The report said: “The total number of children separated from a parent or guardian by immigration authorities is unknown.”
It is with such figures in mind that a tweet by Melania Trump is receiving much criticism. She wrote:
“Our work in the East wing continues into 2019 with online safety, fighting opioid abuse & supporting the well-being of children everywhere! #BeBest"
Her comments went down like a lead balloon
People pointed out Donald Trump - her husband's - vitriol and administrative decisions had a detrimental impact on thousands of families
Many thought the tweet was insensitive and hypocritical
And people referred her to her unfortunate fashion choices...
Remember thatjacket?
According to the White House, Melania’s #BeBest campaign is meant to “champion the many successful well-being programs that provide children with the tools and skills required for emotional, social and physical health."
The administration’s “zero tolerance” family separation policy makes her tweet is, according to her critics, tone-deaf.
