The House is becoming more and more diverse thanks to the new Democratic majority, and the ushering in of a record-setting number of women – the first two Muslim women, the first two Native American women and the first openly bisexual woman, senator Kyrsten Sinema.
Sinema was sworn in my Mike Pence and used a law book instead of a Bible or any other religious text.
Mike Pence has got a spotted past when it comes to LGBT+ rights. The US vice president has a long and documented history of anti-gay views. High profile gay people, like ice skater Adam Rippon for example, refused meetings with him as a result.
In 2000, Pence had suggested funding for HIV/AIDS patients should be diverted into conversion therapy programmes.
Needless to say, people online found the fact that he was swearing in an openly bisexual woman, ironic.
Viewers revelled in what they perceived to be discomfort in Pence’s demeanour.
Others played a game: 'What is Mike Pence thinking?'
Kyrsten Sinema's defiance is a mood
Kyrsten Sinema joins New York’s Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who became the youngest woman to be sworn into congress, along with Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib, who also made history for being the first Muslim women to be in a legislative position in America.
Ayanna Pressley became Massachusetts’ first black congresswoman, and Deb Haaland and Sharice Davids will be the first indigenous women in Congress.
This is the level of slay-age everyone should aspire to in 2019.
