It's the EU referendum, and some people are getting carried away with conspiracy theories.

Some think the referendum results will be hacked with the aid of rubbers, and Vote Leave has actually had to clarify for people that this BBC 'bulletin' is not real:

In fact, one Greater London mum was so worried the elections might be rigged by others rubbing out pencil ballots, she actually called the police.

But how prolifically are these conspiracy theories actually believed?

A YouGov poll had some interesting (read: scary) findings about how many Britons believe the EU referendum is rigged.

The following Statista chart shows the results, below:

Forty six per cent of Leave voters think the referendum is rigged, and 28 per cent think the British secret service is involved in a nefarious plot to keep the UK in the EU.

Only 11 per cent of those intending to vote Remain believe in the rigging rumours, and 16 per cent think the MI5 is involved.

If 46.5million people are eligible to vote, and current polls suggest almost half of voters will vote leave, that means a potential seven million people think the referendum result is going to be rigged.

Oh yes, and if we leave the EU, Britain will be invaded by the lizard people, Siri will take over the world and the moon doesn’t exist.

People, get it together.
