The mystery of Oxford's bad smell

Yesterday, the good residents of Brighton responded magnificently to heavy thunderstorms. Today, the people of Oxford are keeping calm and carrying on despite being hit by widespread reports of an unbearably bad smell.

One Twitter user described it as "like cheesy wotsits", another like vomit and another like human poo slurry. Yuck!

So far there's no word on what's causing it, except we know it is not sewage work.
