The top word of 2014 was not actually a word but the heart emoji, according to analysts at the Global Language Monitor.

To find this out, they analysed 250,000 print and electronic news media outlets and news sources including Twitter.

Words and concepts are then tracked according to their frequency, contextual usage and appearance in global media outlets. Here are the top 15:
