A waitress has claimed that she was fired from her job for refusing to wear a bra to work.

Kate Hannah, 22, alleges that she was dismissed from her job as a waitress at the Bird & Beer in Beverley, East Riding of Yorkshire after her manager dealt with an inappropriate sexual comment towards her by demanding she isn't to come into work in the future without wearing a bra.

Posting on her Facebook page, alongside a picture of herself in the uniform she wrote:

So I've just got home after being sacked from my job, for refusing to wear a bra.

Yesterday an inappropriate sexual remark was made to me, by my managers brother, and in the presence of her.

I felt uncomfortable, objectified and shocked that this had happened.

Unfortunately she saw fit to deal with the situation by telling me that I'm not allowed into work in future unless I'm wearing a bra.

This was said to me in front of three other staff members and customers. Leaving me feeling body shamed and completely shocked that the blame was being put onto me that I had been sexually harassed at work. She called me stupid, silly and over the top when I told her I was upset.

I am absolutely disgusted, with the unprofessionalism, and blatant lack of respect for my right as a woman to wear whatever makes me personally comfortable.

Nobody should EVER feel the need to hide themselves in order to stay away from unwanted sexual comments/behaviour.

Feel so Sad. [sic]

The post has caused a lot of outrage, with some comments suggesting a boycott of the Californian bar.

Bird & Beer have responded to the claims, denying that anyone has been dismissed.

They wrote:

In response to the recent alleged allegations towards Bird & Beer we wish to make the following statement. We can confirm that no employees have been dismissed from the company regarding these allegations.

We have a duty of care to protect all of our employees from any discrimination or sexual harassment within the work place and we take any comments towards our employees very seriously and act upon them immediately in a professional manner.

However, Kate responded by adding:

As everyone can see Bird and Beer have denied my claims.

I was told flat out, I would not be able to go to work and do my job unless I was wearing a bra.

I said I wouldn't be wearing a bra and I was told to leave work, for the second day in a row.

Kate has got mass support since posting, with people suggesting they boycott the restaurant, or go there to breastfeed.

indy100 has reached out to Kate and the Bird & Beer for comment.
