The health of 80-year-old US president Donald Trump continues to be a hotly debated subject online, what with his diagnosis of chronic venous insufficiency last year, his boasting about the many cognitive tests he’s taken and “aced”, and the numerous times he’s seemingly fallen asleep in the Oval Office or in public.
And now, doctors have raised concerns over Trump’s weight, with The Washington Post noting he weighed 215 pounds (15st 5lbs) when he received a criminal indictment from the state of Georgia in August 2023, but weighed 238 pounds (17st) per a memorandum from the president’s physician in May.
The same report noted recommendations for Trump around “increased physical activity” and “continued weight loss”.
Speaking to the Post, Dr Scott Kahan of the National Center for Weight and Wellness said: “We know that obesity is a strong risk factor for numerous health issues – as well as premature disability and death. Addressing obesity to protect the president’s health should be a priority similar to ensuring Secret Service protections for his life.”
Unsurprisingly, when approached for comment as part of the Post’s reporting, the White House took a swipe at Joe Biden’s health while praising Trump.
Spokesman Davis Ingle said: “President Trump’s sharpness, unmatched energy, relentless work ethic and historic accessibility stand in stark contrast to what we saw during the last administration when Democrats and the legacy media intentionally covered up Joe Biden’s serious mental and physical decline from the American people.
“President Trump is the sharpest and most accessible President in American history who is working nonstop to solve problems and deliver on his promises.”
This statement from the White House was soon ridiculed online:
And freelance journalist Euan MacDonald quipped: “Maybe Trump is using special ‘doze’ or ‘snooze’ analysis to tackle the complex problems facing the United States. It’s possible”:
But it’s not just health experts who have raised concerns over Trump’s health, as earlier this month, US health secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr opened up to the Net Positive podcast about his boss’ diet.
“When you get on his airplane, it’s just boxes and boxes of McDonald’s,” he said.
