Facebook just made it easier for people to check up on you

Facebook is everyone's favourite tool for checking up on our exes - admit it - we've all used it for that.

It's now become even easier for your ex to creep on you though - even if you're not friends with them on the site anymore.

The social network is testing a new feature called 'Things in Common', which sounds friendly enough.

It appears in a small box underneath a friend's friends list, prompting you to see what you have in common - whether that be mutual friends, your hometown or mutual likes.

A tempting tool, even if it does feel a little creepy to be reading up on people you don't actually know.

A spokesperson for Facebook said in a statement to Mashable:

'Things in Common' is a section we're testing that contains information that you share in common with someone else, such as mutual friends, page likes and others.

These respect the privacy setting that the profile owner set while entering them. 

Earlier this year, Mark Zuckerberg wrote about Facebook's growing interest in new connections, not just pre-existing ones.

Facebook has been focused on helping you connect with people you already know. 

We've built AI systems to recommend "People You May Know".

But it might be just as important to also connect you with people you should know -- mentors and people outside your circle 

Grand ideas from Zuckerberg, but we all know that if 'Things in Common' is introduced fully it's far more likely we'll use it to be nosy than for reaching out to a mentor.
