Saturday Night Live returned to UStelevision this week for the first time in 2021 and lets just say that a lot has happened since they were last on the air.
Most of January 2021, at least from an American perspective was a rollercoaster of emotions as Trump supporters stormed the Capitol building, Joe Biden was sworn in as president and people on Reddit managed to make Wall Street traders very embarrassed.
The show’s latest episode covered all of these in its cold open in a fictional talk show hosted by Kate McKinnon, called ‘What Still Works?’ Unsurprisingly, not much ‘still worked’ and that was abundantly clear with their first guest, Republican congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene, played by Cecily Strong).
The SNL parody of Greene immediately introduces herself by offering McKinnon a gun and is then asked to reveal what some of her conspiracies are. “First off I believe the Parkland shooting was a hoax, the teachers were actors and the children were dolls,” she started off and things got stranger from there.
“I believe 9/11 was a hoax. Did anyone actually see it happen? I’ve also told my supporters that they should physically murder Nancy Pelosi. She’s this lady that I work with. This is a new one that just came out. I think the California wildfires were caused by Jewish space lasers.”
The sad truth is that many of these aren’t even jokes. They are things that Greene has actually said in the no-so distant past leading to Nancy Pelosi calling on the Republican party to take action against the new Congresswoman. SNL didn’t even have time to go into all of Greene’s conspiracy theories, which include Ruth Bader Ginsberg being replaced by a body double.
Back to SNL and an astonished McKinnon attempted to clarify with Greene that she actually was a member of the government. “People can Google you and it will say that she is a real member of the US government?” Greene replied, “That might not be the first thing that comes up, but yeah.”
Wrapping up the conversation, McKinnon asked Greene what happened when her colleagues found out about all these conspiracy theories, “I was promoted to the education committee” she replied. This is something that actually happened.
The segment also looked at the GameStop situation on Wall Street and featured and interview with ‘Mark Zuckerberg’ and ‘Jack Dorsey’ about Facebook and Twitter banning conservatives, only for them to gravitate to other platforms with less monitoring of their posts.
Derrick Boner stopped by "What Still Works?" to talk stonks. Oh, and Jack Dorsey and Mark Zuckerberg stopped by, to… https://t.co/qxxCf61jNT

While everything might not be working in 2021, at least satire is still going strong.
